A role model for Africa

GHANA: Fantastic inauguration of the Kumasi medical waste treatment centre

6 min.

Jospong Group of Companies has bought 6 Ecosteryl 125 machines. We must confess that we are lucky to have such ambitious and professional clients. The inauguration of the Kumasi site in Ghana took place on July 15. To say the least, our clients put on a great spread to celebrate the official opening of the medical waste treatment centre: they enjoyed the presence of the press, visitors and public figures.

The beautiful story that started in 2021

In 2021, His Excellency M. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the President of Ghana, pointed out the urgent need for safe and environmentally-friendly medical waste management.

The Ghanaian government then suggested the creation of medical waste treatment centres in every region of the country. The Jospong Group of Companies thus decided, together with the government, to implement these centres through its subsidiary Zoomlion.

After conducting research, they discovered Ecosteryl’s eco-friendly solutions. Many exchanges then took place. Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, and Mr. Haidar Said, Executive Director of Processing Cluster, came to Belgium to sign the partnership agreement and the purchase of 6 Ecosteryl 125 machines, which are capable of treating up to 20 tons of medical waste per day.

Training, installation and operation of the medical waste treatment sites

For the centre to be fully operational, all the teams needed to be fully trained. In this regard, Eng. Senam Tengey, who is in charge of the medical waste management project, decided to spend three weeks at Ecosteryl (Mons, Belgium) to familiarize himself with all the details of our machines. This intensive training has enabled him to manage and train his team as well as to operate all the machines.

Conversely, in 2022, it was Ecosteryl’s team of engineers and technicians who travelled to Ghana to install the machines and train the operators on site in real-life situations, with tons of waste to be processed every day.

This phase marked a crucial step towards the creation of an advanced infrastructure dedicated to the management of medical waste in the country. The collaborative efforts between Ecosteryl, Zoomlion and the new Medical Waste Services Limited under the Jospong Group of Companies have paid off: a fully operational centre has now emerged.

Inauguration of the Kumasi medical waste treatment site

On 15 July 2023, the first medical waste treatment centre was inaugurated. In less than two years, the Jospong Group of Companies has demonstrated its efficiency in creating a complete waste treatment centre from scratch – including collection – and then operating it perfectly.

Our Chairman, Olivier Dufrasne, was present in Ghana for this spectacular opening. “I’m really impressed by the professionalism that has been displayed. It certainly is a perfect model to follow and emulate in many other countries”.

The successful establishment of Ecosteryl’s medical waste treatment solutions in Ghana stands as a testament to the importance of partnerships, innovation, and sustainable practices. Through its alliance with Zoomlion, Ecosteryl has paved the way for a greener, safer, and more efficient approach to medical waste management in Ghana.

This partnership serves as the foundation for a long-term collaboration that expands beyond Ghana and into other countries across Africa. It reflects Ecosteryl’s dedication to providing innovative solutions that prioritize both environmental sustainability and public health.

We wish our clients great success.  Congratulations again!
